Altarpiece of the Churches of Arbón, Villayón and Parlero

Villayón has some important examples of religious architecture such as the Church of Parlero, the Church of San Pedro de Villayón, the Church of Santiago de Arbón, the Church of Santa María de Oneta, the Chapel of Lengomin in La Zorera, the Chapel of Nuestra Señora de La Merced in Busmente, and the Chapel of the Virgen de Las Virtudes.

There are also many architectural elements in the municipality.

The Centro de Interpretación de los Paisajes Protegidos de Montaña (Interpretation Centre of the Protected Mountain Landscapes), delves into the importance of the Protected Landscape of the Sierras de Carondio and Valledor and all the elements that surround the protected area: Oneta waterfalls, Barandón Dolmen, etc.

Villayón has revived the traditional sport of bowling, known as “Bolo Celta”, through the establishment of the PEÑA BOLÍSTICA LA CANTERA by passionate fans. Water culture

The municipality of Villayón has an extraordinary passion for nautical and mountain sports, for which the council has a unique refuge: Camping La Cascada, commercial campground located in Arbón. Every year, hundreds of caravanners from Spain and abroad gather in this tourist spot. Among the water sports that can be practised are canoeing and rowing. The ideal place for these activities is the rowing course in Arbón, which can be reached through the village of Arbón in the direction of Navia, crossing the village’s “Llagua”. Located at the end of Arbón, near the crossroads to Villartorey and Villayón, Pozo Mouro is a must-visit spot. By following the course of the rivers, one can come across a large number of mills.

One such mill that stands out is Genaro Pumariega’s mill located in the village of Oneta. It has been completely restored and is currently in operation.
It is the best-preserved mill in the whole Villayón council, with its entire milling mechanism still intact, along with its traditional unit of measurement, known as “the maquila”.

The Arbón reservoir. This reservoir has unique conditions, which make its surrounding fertile land a perfect place for “faba” (Asturian bean) crops. Moreover, this reservoir offers plenty of water activities, and it was even used as a training ground for the Spanish canoeing team. The best part is that you can enjoy all these activities while harmonising with nature.
The municipality of Villayón features a unique combination of hiking trails through water and mountains, as well as flat fields for growing “faba” crops in Arbón.

Famous for having one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Asturias, those of Oneta, which can be reached after a good stretch of road that makes for an accessible and entertaining route, Villayón is a council dotted with mountains and valleys, and whose hydrological orography is marked by the rivers Polea and Navia, the latter being its natural border with neighbouring municipalities.

Water and mountains are the hallmarks of Villayón, whose Sierra de Carondio mountain range is one of the most beautiful landscapes for enjoying nature activities. Like the other municipalities in western Asturias, the predominant colour in its towns and villages is the black of slate, a native material that abounds thanks to the fact that the geological period that outcrops in this part of Asturias is mainly the Silurian. Like the rest of its ‘partners’ in the Navia Historical Park, the archaeological remains of castreños and those of burial mounds and necropolises form part of its cultural heritage, which also has in its numerous emblazoned mansions an exponent of what was the ‘rural splendour’ around the Navia basin.
